In the near future the ultimate sporting event is the deathrace. Contestants get score points for running people downthey speed across the country. The sport has crazed fans who sacrifice themselves to the drivers. An overt agency is trying to bring an end to the immoral deathrace and has infiltrated one of their followers in to the racea navigator. In the end of the race the lives of the competitors, the President and the deathrace itself are in peril. Death Race 2000 (1975) <br/><br/>*** (out of 4) <br/><br/>Produced by Roger Corman this is a prime example of a cult classic from the 70s. In a cross country race, drivers are given bonus points for running over anyone on the streets. The film is pure nonsense from start to finish and that&#39;s what makes it so much fun to watch. It&#39;s overly violent and over the top all the way through with fun performances by David Carradine and Sylvester Stallone. The movie never takes itself too serious, which was great considering today you&#39;d probably have to throw political junk into the mix. Set in the (then) distant future, this mindless &#39;70s action trashbag follows a corny, take-no-prisoners cross country sports car race that&#39;s earned a passionate, dedicated global viewership. In this morally lax futuristic derby, deception is expected, quirky charms are celebrated and pedestrian roadkill is rewarded; the only rule being finish first no matter the cost. When Peter Fonda turned down this leading role, he dubbed it &quot;too ridiculous for words,&quot; and I can&#39;t find it in me to muster a more accurate description of the plot. In Fonda&#39;s placethe arrogant, bloodthirsty racetrack legend is David Carradine (fresh off his lengthy tenure on Kung Fu), with a very young pre-Rocky Sylvester Stallonehis primary foil. Carradine is a fish out of water trying to play it straight, while Stallone embraces the cheese and comes offthe much better fit. Incredibly stupid fare with awful effects, a paper-thin plot and a sado-masochistic Halloween enthusiast&#39;s wardrobe, it&#39;s precisely what the artwork promises: a big, idiotic, head-shaking joyride. Death Race 2000 isn’t the sharp satire Corman thinks it is, but it’s fun.
